Style-sheet development

Give recurring editorial decisions a reliable home.

One reference for repeated choices

A style sheet records the decisions that a general style guide cannot make for your particular document. It can cover spelling preferences, capitalization, specialist terms, abbreviations, numbers, character names, and recurring formatting choices.

The point is to make the next decision easier. A useful entry states the preferred form, explains any exception, and gives an example when a rule could otherwise be interpreted in more than one way.

Build it from the writing

We review the supplied material and collect recurring choices. Conflicting forms become questions for the author or project owner. Once those questions are resolved, the sheet gives future contributors a shared reference.

For a series or an organization, identify who has authority to approve changes. An unowned style sheet can become another document that quietly drifts out of date.

What you receive

An organized, editable style sheet based on the agreed sample or document set, with unresolved queries clearly distinguished from approved choices. The brief defines the scope of the review and whether updates to source documents are included.

Bring the existing conventions

Send any house style, publisher instructions, preferred dictionary, terminology lists, and examples that represent the intended voice. If no conventions exist yet, we can discuss a practical starting point.
